Mount Isa mayor Joyce McCulloch said the route in Mount Isa will be nine kilometres in length, but that its layout had not been chosen yet.
“That’s what will be churned out in the next few months," Cr McCulloch said, following her official announcement of the city’s involvement in the games’ opening ceremony.
Mount Isa City Council, sporting clubs, Outback at Isa and Mount Isa Police District representatives met at the John Campbell Miles Memorial Lookout to listen to the mayor’s prepared announcement.
The baton will be in Mount Isa on March 6. It’s almost a month before the opening ceremony in the Gold Coast on April 4.
“This is an incredible opportunity for Mount Isa and our residents, and I am very excited to see the plans progress throughout the next 12 months before the momentous occasion,” Cr McCulloch said.
“I encourage you to nominate a local legend you think deserves to be a batonbearer, whether they’re an aspiring young person or someone who is already accomplished.”
Nominations opened on Sunday. Locals are urged to nominate anyone who inspires them into greatness. Nominations are to made at gc2018.com/qbr.
Mount Isa Police District tactician, Senior Sergeant Brad Inskip, said the Queensland Police Service had examined a proposed route with the Mount Isa City Council.
“We obviously look at the traffic flow and the security side of things with that route, and make sure it’s a successful event," Senior Sergeant Inskip said.
He said that the Commonwealth Games would have the world’s attention and it would be no different when the baton was in Mount Isa. This coverage offered the opportunity for people to protest or draw attention to themselves.
“It’s our job the baton passes through Mount Isa without any incidents,” Senior Sergeant Inskip said.
A dedicated police team will follow the baton.
They would be supported by local police officers.
