The Palaszczuk government has announced plans to simplify retail trading hours, including allowing businesses selling cars and caravans to open the same hours as supermarkets.

It came after an independent review recommended trading hours be simplified and made more customer-friendly to encourage employment and end confusion.

But Caravanning Queensland chief executive officer Ron Chapman said the current trading hours serviced demand for caravans effectively and they opposed Sunday trading.

"Extending trading hours would increase consumer costs due to increased overheads, negatively affecting the potential sales to be made," Mr Chapman said.

Caravanning Queensland is an industry body for caravan dealers, manufacturers, camping suppliers, service providers and caravan park operators.

About 92 per cent of members said they were against the decision, arguing increased trading hours would severely impact on smaller dealerships.

Mr Chapman said overheads would be increased, there would be a huge demand to find a limited and specialised workforce to work the extra hours.

"Business operators would not have a choice in the matter, and many dealerships would be open for open's sake," he said.

In 2015, Queensland sold more caravans, motorhomes and recreational vehicles than any other state in the country.

That is despite New South Wales and Victoria having a larger population and seven-day trading.

"Despite our smaller population, Queensland has long exceeded sales of those in New South Wales, further proving no need for extending current hours," Mr Chapman said.

He said caravan dealers in Queensland also chose not to trade after 5pm Monday to Friday, despite the ability to open until 9pm, due to a lack of consumer demand later at night.

Mr Chapman said families tended to be the target market for caravan buyers and the current hours were more than adequate.

"Purchasing a caravan is more of a project rather than a leisurely activity," he said.

"It takes months, often a couple of years of research and education for buyers to come to a purchase decision."

Industrial Relations Minister Grace Grace said the changes would allow caravan dealers to determine what hours they opened within the new allowable hours.

"It's important to note that it is not compulsory for caravan dealers to open on Sundays," Ms Grace said.

"They don't have to open for the full spread of hours - this is a business decision for the individual owners based on client needs and what is best for the business."

Ms Grace said the government believed the new hours provided flexibility for customers to shop over a wider range of hours.
