Newly promoted vice captain Stephen Coniglio will have scans this weekend on the left ankle he injured in the Giants' 38-point preseason win over North Melbourne at Manuka Oval on Friday.

The silky midfielder left the ground in the third quarter and was put on ice for the rest of the game after trying to run the injury off up and down the boundary line. He was using crutches to move around in the change rooms after the match before being put into a moon boot for the late bus ride back to Sydney.

Coniglio was lucky to escape serious injury after his left leg twisted awkwardly in a tackle by Andrew Swallow, but may still miss several rounds at the start of the season.

And he wasn't the only one injured in a bruising final hit-out before round one against Adelaide in two weeks, with Aidan Corr leaving the field early with what looked a serious hand injury, and Steve Johnson taken from the field at quarter time suffering concussion.

Dylan Shiel, Adam Tomlinson and Rory Lobb all copped heavy knocks throughout but look to have escaped relatively unscathed.

"It's always disappointing, you get to that last game and you're trying to get through unscathed as well and play some pretty good footy," Giants coach Leon Cameron said.

"It's not ideal but that's life. It [Coniglio's injury] didn't look the greatest but time will tell, hopefully he can bounce out of this scan over the weekend and it's OK but we're not going to know until probably Monday.

"It's probably more ligament I think, I don't think it's bone. The guys are a little bit unsure at the moment and to be fair they need to have a good look at it tomorrow."

The Giants put aside the injury carnage to turn an eight-point half-time deficit into a thumping win, producing a second half showing off many of the qualities which has them listed as premiership favourites this season.

Toby Greene booted five goals in a polished performance, as did Kangaroos' big man Jarrad Waite who's contested marking caused the home side issues throughout the night.

While the Giants are favoured to win the flag, North have been tipped by many to slip out of the eight after their horrible finish to 2016, and the loss of more than 1000 games of experience in the off season following the departures of Brent Harvey, Drew Petrie, Nick Dal Santo and Michael Firrito.

But their first-half performance will give Kangaroos fans plenty of optimism heading into round one.

"I was really rapt with the first 15 minutes of the first quarter, but then we sort of lost our way a little bit," Cameron said.

"They disturbed us for probably the next 15 which was disappointing, to start well and drop away. The second quarter they had the better of us.

"We regrouped at half-time and talked about our ball movement which wasn't the greatest and our attack on the footy needed to be a bit better.

"Some of the guys who were probably struggling in the first half started to get their hands on the footy and play some OK footy. You walk away happy that the second half was better but we need to be going a little bit better."
