The Brumbies secured a breakthrough win on Friday night to ignite their season ahead of a clash against arch rivals the NSW Waratahs in Sydney next weekend.

However, the high of beating the Western Force 25-17 has been tempered slightly by the lack of clarity regarding the club's future beyond the end of the season.

SANZAAR officials met for two days in London to discuss potential changes to Super Rugby, including the potential of axing an Australian team, and it appears a final decision now rests with the broadcasters.

It is believed a decision has been made to change the competition format, and a a SANZAAR statement on Saturday morning said there had been "robust discussions" and it was hoped there would be clarity in the coming days.

The Brumbies, Force and Melbourne Rebels are desperate for an answer on whether an Australian team will be cut as part of a plan to shrink the competition and also cut two South African teams.

There was also an option of streamlining the confusing four-conference system to have have three conferences of six teams.

It is believed the Australian, New Zealand, South African and Argentina unions have reached some sort of agreement, but the final tick of approval needs to come from the broadcasters, who inject money into the game.

The ARU receives $285 million from its share of the broadcast deal.

It is unclear if the ARU agreed to reduce the number of Australian teams from five to four, the rugby community is buzzing with rumours, including a potential Brumbies-Rebels merger.

Any decision to cut teams from the competition requires unanimous agreement from individual countries, meaning the ARU would have to agree to axing one of its own franchises.

Larkham expressed his confidence in the Brumbies' future and said the players were only focused on playing against the Waratahs in the only derby between the teams this season.

"It's not affecting the players at all," Larkham said.

"They're all focused on putting their best performances on the field and they're assuming the club will be here next year. We're all confident we'll be here next year.

"There's no angst at the moment, but the longer it goes on I guess it could happen.

"The decision is out of our hands, we basically have to deal with the consequences of that. But there's nothing we can do about it at the moment.

"We've got a really strong history of rugby in the Canberra region, we've got a good Super Rugby record ... we were one of the original teams. It would be reassuring if we got that from the ARU, but there are decisions that have to be made."

SANZAAR hierarchy met in London on Friday and Saturday to assess the economic and sporting environment of Super Rugby.

"Following two days of robust discussion there are a number of tournament considerations that now require further discussion and consultation," SANZAAR boss Andy Marinos said.

"This includes final consultation within the National Unions and discussion with key stakeholders that would allow the adoption of changes proposed by the strategic plan.

"SANZAAR will make a formal statement on the future of the organisation, Super Rugby and the tournament format in the coming days once these further meetings have been concluded."

The Brumbies are set to be bolstered by the return of Scott Sio and Scott Fardy for the clash against the Waratahs.

Sio is on track to recover from a hamstring injury to play his first game of the season while Fardy was rotated out of the game-day squad last weekend.
