He rated Little Miss Chelsy as his best chance of the day in the benchmark 52 handicap (2000 metres), although felt McGovern would be competitive in the benchmark 55 handicap (1000m).

Little Darcy was also running in the maiden handicap (900m).

McGovern was with the Nick Olive stables before he came to Wilson and she's something of a battle horse, with the eight-year-old having 13 wins and 21 places from her 84 starts.

She's saluted 11 times for Wilson and he felt she would be competitive at Queanbeyan.

"She's drawn bad, she retires in August so as long as the tracks are good she'll keep racing. She doesn't like the wet tracks, but she'll still be competitive," Wilson said.

"My other one's a better chance, Little Miss Chelsy, she should go very close to winning.

"She's tun three thirds and a fifth in her last few starts. She'll be very competitive, 2000m suits, she's down a little bit in grade. She'll be very hard to beat."

Training is just a hobby for Wilson, with the 62-year-old doing a few odd jobs to supplement his income.

He was born into the racing industry, given his old man was a bookmaker.

Wilson started out more than 30 years ago and worked for the legendary Frank Cleary back in the day.

He moved to Queanbeyan from Braidwood 17 years ago.

"My old man was a bookmaker and then we had a few horses and I went and worked for Frank Cleary for awhile and then I started training," Wilson said.

Meanwhile, fellow Queanbeyan trainer Joe Cleary - Frank's son - won the $100,000 Wellington Boot (1100m) with Lucy Rose and Canberra trainer Gratz Vella won the $80,000 Wellington Cup (1700m) with American Time at Wellington on Sunday.
