The Queensland Redistribution Commission released its proposal to shake-up the state's electoral boundaries in February, also creating four new seats.

But experts say renaming seats such as Brisbane Central to McConnel, despite only getting a minor tweak of its boundaries, has the potential to cause mass confusion.

It is understood Labor and the LNP will have a bipartisan approach to support retaining geographical place names for seats such as Brisbane Central.

Member for Brisbane Central Grace Grace is supporting a push to stop her seat from being renamed McConnel.

???"I think a lot of people feel that the seat should be named after the capital of Queensland," Ms Grace said.

She said people did not identify with the name "McConnel" as being the centre of Brisbane and the suggestion came at the same time as a fairly "substantial redistribution".

"We've added four seats, we're moving to four-year terms, I just think this is another change in the name... I feel a lot of people in my electorate feel a disconnect that they don't need," she said.

"I think it's a bit too much all at the one go."

Ms Grace sent an email with the subject line "Let Brisbane Central stay Brisbane Central!" to her constituents, providing a link to provide feedback to the commission.

She said she had received about 40 to 50 emails from people saying they would send a submission to the commission and support the call to save Brisbane Central.

"We've had an incredibly response from locals... with most people agreeing that they would like to see it remain as Brisbane Central," Ms Grace said.

"You don't want to make voting hard, we don't want to make it confusing.

"I think Brisbane Central says it all."

McConnel was named after the founder of Queensland's first children's hospital, Mary McConnel.

Ms Grace said her stance had nothing to do with the merits of the name McConnel.

"But my view is that Queensland deserves a seat named after its capital - Brisbane Central. I also believe the costs associated with renaming this seat can be saved by keeping Brisbane Central," she said.

Other seats suggested for name changes were Mount Isa (changed to Traeger), Ashgrove (Cooper), Indooroopilly (Maiwar) and Yeerongpilly (Miller), although some had significant boundary changes.

But there were plenty to survive the chop, including Bulimba, Clayfield, Lytton, Stafford, South Brisbane, Stretton, Mansfield and Springwood.

It is understood both Labor and the LNP are not supportive of changes to existing names that are based on geographical locations.

Fairfax Media understands Labor's submission to the proposal will argue the case to revert back to geographical names in some electorates, such as McConnel remaining as Brisbane Central.

Labor will also argue the case for Palm Island to be brought back into the electorate of Townsville, make some minor suggestions around the edges in a small number of electorates but does not expect to submit wholesale changes to the Commission's draft boundaries.

Labor is still consulting with MPs, party members and considering its submission.

The LNP's submission is also expected to be supportive of existing geographical place names remaining in place, such as Brisbane Central.

The Queensland Redistribution Commission's proposal said some districts changed so significantly it made the current names no longer compatible.

"There were some electorates named after towns or regions, where the electorate has 'moved away' from the town after which it is named," the commission's proposal reads.

"For example, the suburb of Kallangur is no longer within the electorate that bears its name."

The commission said it decided to move away from the practice of naming electoral districts after towns or suburbs within them, favouring significant landmarks instead.

"Experience has shown that in time electorates 'move' and their boundaries change - resulting sometimes in the suburb being outside the electorate, or on its margin," it wrote.

Objections and comments to the proposal are open until 5pm on March 27 via boundaries.ecq.qld.gov.au
