The fight was the main bill on the card at Eaton’s Hill on Saturday following the cancellation of Saturday’s original main event between world No. 10 light-heavyweight Trent Broadhurst and American Travis Reeves.
The pair duly delivered going seven of eight rounds before Rodriguez sent Johnston to the canvas to win by a technical knock out.
The pair were evenly matched by weight and both had just one loss coming into the fight, with Johnston recording nine wins — five by knockout.
And while Johnston had the better of the early exchanges Rodriguez gradually took control to record the TKO and become the Queensland champion, a title Johnston held in 2014.
The defeat is a severe blow to Johnston’s hopes of contending for the Australian title in June.
Johnston is now ranked 12 in Australia.
