Visitors staying longer than an hour in short term parking will now be charged a small fee.

The pick-up and drop-off area has been relocated to the short term parking area, which can be accessed via a ticketed control gate.

Anyone dropping off passengers will not be charged if they stay for less than one hour.

Charges for long-term parking have increased from $10 to $12 a day, but will be discounted to the original rate after five days.

These changes coincide with the completion of upgrades to the car park, including more parking spaces, shade structures, access control gates and CCTV cameras.

The parking area holding rental cars also has a boom gate to differentiate from public parking spaces.

A parking warden was assisting drivers on Monday morning when the changes came into place, making sure they understood the new system.

Mount Isa Airport’s Chief Operating Officer, Kevin Gill, said the new facility would improve passenger experience, safety and access at the airport.

“As the gateway to Outback Queensland, we understand the importance of providing a positive experience for travellers, and with the parking facility improvements, we will achieve just this,” Mr Gill said.

The upgrade project began in July 2016 and includes more than 60 car spaces, and shade structures for the long term car park, rental car park, and pedestrian walkways.

The upgrade represents an investment of over $3.5 million by Queensland Airports Limited, Mount Isa Airport’s parent company, who also own and operate Gold Coast, Townsville and Longreach Airports.
