The 23-year-old male driver was transferred to the Townsville Hospital in a critical condition following the crash last Thursday night.
Mount Isa Police Station’s officer in charge, Senior Sergeant Renee Hanrahan said the driver had significant chest and abdominal injuries. Three passengers were “very lucky to escape without injuries”.
She said the car hit the curb and collided with the fence after trying to overtake another vehicle, which slowed to turn left. The car may have spun several times after hitting the fence.
Police continue to investigate the crash.
“Initial enquiries suggest excess speed and alcohol were contributing factors.”
