Jason Collett is hoping the wait for his elusive first group 1 winner ends in the Vinery Stud Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday.

Things are falling into place for him with classy New Zealand filly La Bella Diosa.

Collett said she felt like a group 1 filly when she caused a surprise in the Surround Stakes at Randwick last month, beating Omei Sword and dual group 1 winner Global Glamour.

However, then what has become an annoyingly regular pattern for Collett occurred. He was faced with the disappointment of not riding the filly at her next start because of suspension, and she failed to beat a runner home in the Coolmore Classic.

"It has happened to me before: you miss out on these good ones and then watch someone win a big one on them," Collett said. "Usually they go out and run a big race or win with me watching."

So he was glad to get the call from Mandy and Matt Brown to ride the New Zealand 1000 Guineas winner again.

"The way she won at Randwick was very convincing and she felt like getting out in trip would suit her," Collett said. "She was definitely one I wanted to stay with, but the suspension came at the wrong time.

"You worry that you are not going to get another chance on a horse like her, so to get the booking again was great.

"I think her best will be seen at 2000 metres and over. I galloped her on the course proper at Randwick on Tuesday and she was relaxed and liked the soft ground.

"These are the races she was sent over here for and where they expected her to race at her best."

Despite drawing the outside gate, La Bella Diosa is a $4.80 second pick in betting behind Foxplay at $3.50 with Sportsbet. Collett isn't worried about her last run or the draw.

"I knows she handles the heavy ground and she will relax and run the 2000m, that is always a major part of these staying fillies race," he said. "I think she got out of her comfort zone last start and you just have to forget the run."

Collett also has Astronomos in the Neville Sellwood Stakes on Saturday as he looks to make it back-to-back wins.

"He is another one that likes the cut in the ground and is going to be hard to beat," Collett said. "They are both the kind of rides I want to take full advantage of."

Meanwhile, Matthew Hill has been announced as the race caller to replaced his mentor Greg Miles when he finishes as the voice of Melbourne racing next month.

"Being from Melbourne, this has always been the role that meant the most to me," Hill said. "From when I was a young lad walking on to Flemington I was always fascinated by the sound of the races and those that called the action.
