A defiant Gutherson will have no better chance to show Eels officials they already have a ready-made five-eighth when they face Bird's Sharks at ANZ Stadium on Saturday night, amid mounting speculation Cronulla's premiership winner is being tempted with a multimillion-dollar deal to head west.

Gutherson has only just warmed to the role after being thrust into the halves midway through last year after Kieran Foran walked out on the club - and now wants to stay there.

"I played all my junior footy with Birdy as we were about the same age," Gutherson said. "I've known him for a long time.

"If he comes he comes. At the moment I've got the No.6 jersey and I'm trying to make it mine. That's what I'm looking forward to.

"I don't really listen to [the speculation] to be honest. If it happens, it happens. It's all about what the club says.

"[Coach Brad Arthur] has said he's supporting me at the moment and he hasn't said anything different. I'll just continue to go by that and try to get better and better each game."

Gutherson will welcome back Norman into the halves after the Dally M contender sat out the Eels' unbeaten start to the season, which was was snapped by a battered Titans last week.

Veteran Jeff Robson slotted into the halves alongside Gutherson and Eels players are adamant they're more than a one-man band with an emerging spine that includes Kaysa Pritchard and Bevan French.

But Gutherson, 22, knows who the team belongs to.

"I'll play like a second fullback and it's [Norman's] team," he said. "He'll run the show and if I can just help out and take a bit of pressure off here and there and help the team [that would be great].

"Normy's a freak and he's come out firing this year. We've just got to let him do what he does and we can play off the back of that.

"It was probably halfway through last year when I got thrown in there ... I got asked to play there and said, 'why not?'

"I'm playing there now the rest is history. I've just got to keep getting better each week helping Normy and the team out. I'm looking forward to the challenge."

The Eels have won four of their last seven clashes against Cronulla and Gutherson conceded the Sharks, who were tripped up by the Dragons in the local derby last week, now had a target on them.

"You always want to step up against the premiers," Gutherson said. "They're obviously at the top of the game. You always get an extra boost playing them. They're on the wanted list. We're going to turn up ready to play and hopefully come away with the two points.

"It doesn't really matter what [result] they're coming off, it's about how we turn up on Saturday."
