The underdog (at least according to the bookies) won five out of the nine games this weekend and the last three teams to win an AFL Premiership (Sydney, Hawthorn and the Western Bulldogs) all failed to win.

Five teams opened their account to shake the Owen monkey off their back with the biggest shock of the round coming as the Dockers upset the reigning premiers which means Fremantle is both the last team to beat the Bulldogs before the 2016 premiership and the first team to beat them since.

Meanwhile just three teams remain unbeaten - Adelaide, Richmond (no, that's not a mistake) and Geelong.

Our crack(pot) panel returns to run the rule over round three of the AFL season.

Tim

1. West Coast and Fremantle could learn a thing or two from the 0-3 Swans. In the past couple of seasons, Sydney have been the best club in the competition at blooding youngsters while still remaining ultra-competitive. Nine of the Swans players against the Pies had played less than 20 games and yet Sydney came within a whisker of winning. The Swans' 'kids' also stood up when it counted with their last three goals coming from two second gamers (Will Hayward and Nic Newman) and a third gamer (Oliver Florent) while Harry Marsh (10 games) and Aliir Aliir (15 games) also impressed.
2. Speaking of winless teams, round three saw five teams shake the Owen monkey off their back with four of the five (Gold Coast, Collingwood, Fremantle and Carlton) scoring upset victories. It's extremely surprising to see that the only teams yet to open their account are three of the best in recent years - Hawthorn (2013-15 Premiers), Sydney (2012 Premiers and 2014 and 2016 grand finalists) and North Melbourne (2014-15 preliminary finalists and 2016 finalists).
3. Ross Lyon played the kids and got the result, now it's time trust the kids and give them an extended run in the team. I couldn't help but notice three of the youngsters Fremantle picked against the Bulldogs (Ethan Hughes, Harley Balic and Griffin Logue) were also the Dockers' three lowest possession winners. Will Lyon keep the faith and play them again this week or will he turn back to the axed senior players now he's had a taste of victory?

Claire

1. I'm loving the unexpected wins that teams are enjoying this season. And with my tips already shot after three rounds, I'm free to enjoy the topsy-turvy season, long may it continue!
2. The deliberate out of bounds rule needs to be looked at. The most obvious, but not only, example from the weekend was at the MCG on Sunday, when Kade Simpson shepherded the ball out of bounds off an Essendon kick and won a free kick for it. Simpson clearly had a chance to keep the ball in play but chose to let it run out - yet he was the player rewarded. The onus is now on the kicking player to keep the ball in play, to a ridiculous extent.
3. All the pain that comes with being a modern-day Carlton supporter can be erased with one win over Essendon. To be honest, I already knew that. But it's always nice to get a reminder.

Justin

1. Grumpy old man Brendan Foster got even grumpier in round three. First of all, he waited through a 165-minute delay to watch his beloved Eagles, and for what? He should have known his team can't win at the MCG. Second, and just to rub salt into the wound, he had to watch a rejuvenated Fremantle pull off the greatest win of the first three rounds. But chin up, Fossie, you've got a winless (and angry) Sydney side this week.
2. Fremantle will be all smiles on the training track this week. Playing the 'kids' was always the answer, but who would have thought the result would be so positive so quickly? Not even me - a diehard Dockers fan. Debutants Griffin Logue and Harley Balic were impressive, but perhaps the biggest change from the first two weeks was the passion they injected to the senior group. Nat Fyfe, Lachie Neale, Stephen Hill and Michael Walters all thrived off as a result. And that Brady Grey 'kid' wasn't bad, either.
3. The Demons are running out of excuses. Melbourne's list isn't super young any more, and the "we're getting there" mantra isn't acceptable. Melbourne fans should be livid with the suspensions of Jesse Hogan and Jordan Lewis. This is the first season in a decade their team has a realistic finals chance, but the loss of their three most important players (after Gawn did a hammy during the game) hurt them against the Cats. In a season where the top eight looks closer than ever, early losses could come back to bite them.

Michael

1. Placing a coach under pressure and in the spotlight = four points. Rodney Eade, Nathan Buckley and Ross Lyon were all put under the microscope last week for their bad starts to the season and they all delivered with unexpected victories. Who's next in the hot seat?
2. West Coast still fail under the bright lights at the MCG. Yes the wet weather made it almost impossible to kick ahead in the final term, but 8.17 is a waste. Why the Eagles can't win at the 'G is beyond me. They should have beaten the Tigers but I once again learn the Eagles can't be taken seriously as a Grand Final winner until they learn to win at the home of footy.
3. Nick Riewoldt isn't human. A knee injury in round one looked like the end of the champion forward's career but miraculously he missed only one game and on his return against the Lions racked up 28 possessions, 12 marks and 3 goals. Is the 34-year-old a sneaky chance at the Brownlow Medal? I think so.

Brendan

1. To the Dockers' nuffies like Justin who scooted down to Mandurah Forum to buy two cans of Bush Chook to celebrate Fremantle's shock win over the Doggies, I hope you left one beer in the fridge. None of the 'kids' Lyon played contributed and the bloke who got Freo over the line - Nat Fyfe - won't be there next year. And don't drink your one beer too early against the Dees because now it's your turn to enjoy a 165-minute away game delay.
2. Cometh the hour, cometh the man. Cometh the pressure, cometh the Jack Darling choke in front of goals.
3. How can you not believe in evolution when you see Port Adelaide supporters brawling during The Showdown? Even Cro-Magnon people are more civilised.
