Lewis was controversially traded to the Demons in the off-season after 264 games and four flags with the Hawks.

The Demons' season got off to a flying start on Saturday as they comprehensively defeated St Kilda by five goals at Etihad Stadium in a dream club debut for Lewis.

Melbourne are widely-regarded as having one of the best midfields in the AFL now and the victory was achieved largely on the backs of midfielders Lewis, Clayton Oliver, Nathan Jones, Bernie Vince, Billy Stretch and Christian Petracca as well as star ruckman Max Gawn.

"I don't want to put expectations on the group (but) I don't want to put a ceiling on it (either)," Lewis said after training at Gosch's Paddock on Tuesday.

"I think we've got a lot of kids who were drafted early but that only gets you so far and I think what we've seen is these kids are competitive as well, which is what I like about them.

"I nearly fell over yesterday when I read that Clayton Oliver has only played 14 games. He's come a really long way this year.

"I think I have the confidence in him that he's going to put (together) consistent games back-to-back.

"The thing you need with a midfield is depth, I think we've got that at the moment. We've been pretty lucky with injuries so we haven't had to run a hell of a lot of players through there.

"The midfield plays with confidence knowing they've got players around them that they can rely on."

Lewis said Gawn was "exceptional" against the Saints. The reigning All-Australian ruckman helped himself to 49 hitouts, soundly beating St Kilda's Tom Hickey in the process.

"It just gives you so much confidence going to a stoppage knowing you've got the ruck quality of Max," Lewis said.

Lewis is no stranger to handling heightened expectations and with the Demons tipped by many to end their 10-year finals drought this year, the 30-year-old has played his part in helping his young teammates remain level-headed.

"It's important inside the four walls of the club that you keep it pretty neutral," Lewis said.

"There's expectations from the players' point of view as well. We want to play finals, we want to have a good season, we understand the fans want that as well and I think they can see out on the ground now that we're starting to put it together.

"We understand there's probably going to be hiccups along the way, but if we can understand that the win on the weekend was a really good win but as quick as we can move on from that and understand we've got another game this week I think that'll hold us in good stead."

Melbourne's next match is against wooden spoon fancies Carlton at the MCG on Sunday, giving them a great opportunity to start a season with consecutive wins for the first time since 2005.

Lewis agreed that one of the challenges the Demons faced this week was to be ruthless against a weaker opponent.

"I think that's a challenge every week," Lewis said.

"Sometimes the challenge is getting up for a side that you've had some really bad losses against and you need to really build yourself up.

"That's exactly the same when you come up against a side like Carlton who had a bad loss on the weekend. We understand they're going to come back with fire in their belly and 'Bolts' (Carlton coach Brendon Bolton) will have them all revved up so we need to be ready for that."

Jesse Hogan (ankle) failed to train on Tuesday but the club is hopeful he will line up against the Blues.
