Redkirk Warrior is a horse that breaks the rules on both sides of the world and as lead trainer David Hayes says "long may it continue" heading into Saturday's Doncaster Mile at Randwick.

After breaking a 100-year hoodoo by winning the Newmarket Handicap first-up at Flemington, Redkirk Warrior embarks on part two of Hayes' ambitious autumn plan before taking on the best in the spring.

"When he won the Sandown Stakes last spring we knew we had a serious horse. He beat Stratum Star that day and he has just kept winning since, including a group 1," Hayes said. "That was second-up in Australia and it gives you confidence that the mile is not going to be a problem for him on Saturday.

"I thought we had a weight-for-age horse after that but he still had a good mark in the big handicaps. So we decided to have a crack at the biggest handicaps in the country - the Newmarket and Doncaster. People didn't think he could win a Newmarket, I did. I really think he will be competitive in the best weight-for-age races in the spring, so with 53kg in a Doncaster, he is going to be hard to beat."

Bart Cummings' grand sprinter-miler Maybe Mahal is the last horse to have completed the Newmarket-Doncaster double, in 1978, and it has been 22 years since a Newmarket winner backed up in the Doncaster when All Our Mob ran midfield behind Pharoah.

It is a long way from where Redkirk Warrior started his racing life with a couple of wins in England before being sold to Hong Kong as a Derby horse, a race he started favourite in, before making his way to Australia.

Hayes has taken phone calls from Hong Kong and England from people amazed at his first-up success in the Newmarket, and he says he has just continued to improve and will be better suited at the mile.

"If you asked an Australian, winning at 2000 metres on debut is unheard of and the English are equally amazed by him winning at 1200m because they think he is a stayer," Hayes said.

"He is a horse that breaks the rules. You don't get many horses like that and you can't set them limits.

"They retired him in Hong Kong because of his feet but we have been able to work with him and my farrier has got him back to his best.

"I don't think people over here realise how good you have to be to start favourite in a Hong Kong Derby. He is just a quality racehorse and could really win anything."

Hayes also has Dibayani in the Doncaster which is another Hong Kong reject. He ran in the Derby there in 2014, but he has still not won in Australia.

"He has run second in an Epsom, Chipping Norton and a Villiers, so goes really well at the Randwick mile. He just doesn't win," Hayes said. "I have to say I was disappointed with his last run, but he is horse that is always thereabouts."

Hayes believes Tulip, which was third in the Golden Slipper, can measure at 1400m in the Sires at Randwick on Saturday.

"I thought if you changed the runs with the second horse [Sires favourite Frolic] in the Slipper she would have beaten her," Hayes said.

"She had the worst possible run in the Slipper and still got third, there was no advantage being out wide where she was and I have always thought she would be better at 1400m.

"She is going to get a kinder run in the Sires and one thing we know with her is that she can get through wet ground from her Magic Night win."

Hayes also gives Derryn a real knockout hope in the TJ Smith as the weather closes in.

"He was $81 but if it's wet he should be a $15 chance and could start shorter," Hayes said. "He is a horse that really loves getting his toe in the ground. It brings a lot of these good sprinters back to him."
