The Ministry, a concept developed by British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver is a practical, affordable solution to the problems associated with diet-related diseases.
For the next 10 weeks it will be based in a mobile truck in the forecourt of the rodeo grounds at Buchanan Park with full kitchen facilities and teaching spaces ready for two five-week food preparation courses.
Renee Truscott from Jamie’s Ministry of Food said they were encouraging as many Mount Isans as possible to come cook with them over the coming weeks.
“People come for an hour and a half each week for the five week period,” Renee said.
Renee said the four staff at the Ministry would teach people the basics of cooking.
“We want people to be inspired to cook again or learn to cook if they haven’t already,” she said.
“We want people to use fresh produce and cook from scratch, we don’t want people to rely on packaged foods and takeaway food.”
All the instructions used in the course are based on recipes by Jamie Oliver.
“It’s actually based on the Ministry of Food which was around in the Second World War,” Renee said.
“But it’s been turned on its head. The original Ministry was based on a lack of food whereas now we have an abundance and people don’t know how to use the food we’ve got. We’re going back to basics.”
Mount Isa Deputy Mayor Phil Barwick said council was happy to provide the venue and support services.
“This is of great benefit to the community. and gives people another outlet to an enjoyable activity,” Cr Barwick said.
“We are all about making these kinds of things happen and make the town liveable.”
From Friday March 31 Jamie’s Ministry of Food Mobile Kitchen will deliver two cycles of the five-week cooking course to the community with up to four classes per day running from Monday through to Saturday.
Places are still available on some of the classes.

All food is provided, and students take home one meal for two people after each class.
The cost is $20 per class, $15 for student card holders and $10 for concession holders.
