Webster is filling the void after the Tigers sacked coach Jason Taylor just three games into the season. He is warming the seat for Ivan Cleary, who will soon be announced as Taylor's replacement.

Just last month, Webster agreed to be a pallbearer for Ricky Ciano, the former president of the Rebels' Sydney chapter. Ciano had survived an earlier attempt on his life before he was found dead in an abandoned BMW in rural NSW six weeks ago. He had been visiting Sydney from the Gold Coast to see his daughter but never made it amid reports of a $1.5 million contract fee on his head.

Ciano had left the Rebels in 2015 on the proviso he could walk free if he adhered to certain conditions, including the removal of club tattoos. However, there was an unsuccessful attempt made on his life shortly afterwards at his home on the Central Coast.

The NRL has taken a dim view of players and officials associating with underworld figures. Cronulla prop Andrew Fifita, Parramatta playmaker Corey Norman, former Eel Junior Paulo and Sharks signing James Segeyaro have all been put on notice after receiving consorting notices from police. Roosters recruiter Peter O'Sullivan was deregistered over his links to former brothel owner Eddie Hayson.

However, an NRL spokesperson said Webster had advised the integrity unit in advance that he was attending the funeral because he was a long-term friend of the family. Webster said he had been asked by the family to be a pallbearer and had agreed. The NRL said Webster had handled the matter sensitively and appropriately and it would not be taking the matter any further.

Webster was in charge of the Tigers for the first time in last weekend's loss to Melbourne and will be again for Sunday's clash with St George Illawarra. Cleary could take over as soon as the following week for the encounter against North Queensland.

It has been a tumultuous period for the Tigers, who have been rocked by Taylor's sacking, the contract saga involving their four most influential players, the Tim Simona scandal and the drugs drama involving forward Kyle Lovett.

Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe said Webster's actions showed the high regard he had for the integrity of the game.

"I'd like to commend Andrew for the way he handled himself during this tough time," Pascoe said. "It's never easy to lose someone close to you but despite that Andrew went through the correct procedures to ensure that the integrity of the game was held in highest regard.

"This shows how important he feels the integrity of the NRL is and is a testament to his character."
