Olympian Beki Smith has been named the University of Canberra Athlete in Residence, just weeks after breaking back into the Australian walking team.

Smith finished 28th in the 20-kilometre walk at the 2012 London Olympics, but narrowly missed selection for the Rio Games last year.
The 30-year-old was bitterly disappointed but persevered to be selected for the London World Championships in August.
"I was the second fastest qualifier for Rio and it was a bit heartbreaking after working so hard after having a baby," Smith said.
"I had some time off but bounced back quickly and have just been selected to to compete for Australia at the same course as the London Olympics, it was meant to be I think."
Smith is the first aboriginal woman selected in the prestigious role at UC where she will work with staff and students.
"I'm very proud and honoured. To be the first indigenous woman selected in this role is something pretty special and historic," Smith said.
"Hopefully I can inspire not just indigenous people but all Australians to fulfil their dreams and goals. If you work hard you get these opportunities and I'm very grateful for that.
"It's pretty much a mentor role on campus and quite an interesting role because there is quite a bit of flexibility with what I can do."
Smith's breakthrough performance came at the national race walking championships in 2011, where she recorded her London Olympics qualifying time.
The Canberra-based athlete is determined to become a dual Olympian with her sights firmly set on Tokyo 2020, but Smith said there is an important home stop first.
"I've never made a Commonwealth Games team, it's the only team I haven't made so I definitely want to tick that box at the Gold Coast next year," Smith said.
"My goal this year it top eight at the world champs then hopefully medal at Comm Games next year."
"Female walkers tend to peak between 30-35, so I'll be 33 in Tokyo and fingers crossed I'm at my peak and can go out with bang."
Smith works at the AIS and said with limited prizemoney and endorsement opportunities, it is difficult for walkers to make a living from the sport.
"That's why this role at UC is great thing for athletes like me, it provides an opportunity to help in the community as well as earning some money, it's pretty special to be a part of," Smith said.
Smith is the University's third Athlete in Residence. Track and field star Mel Breen and five-time Paralympian Richard Nicholson have previously held the position.
