Canterbury chief executive Raelene Castle gave the strongest indication yet that Hasler was on the verge of finalising a two-year contract extension following Thursday night's board meeting.

Despite the board giving the green light to put forward a new proposal to the coach, Fairfax Media understands certain sections of club hierarchy still require more time to be convinced Hasler is the right man for the job.

Tension had been mounting at Belmore over the direction of the club, however pressure has eased somewhat with Thursday night's 10-7 win over the Broncos and a decision is hopeful of being reached within a month.

If Hasler stays on, he will likely have to agree to releasing some control of his football department and accept what is a reduced football budget, which is largely funded by the powerful Canterbury Leagues Club.

It was interesting to note that club legend Steve Mortimer, who stood down from the football club board after publicly calling for Hasler's axing last year, was back in the inner sanctum on Thursday night.

He was invited by Hasler to present debutant halfback Matt Frawley with his jersey before the game - a significant moment given Mortimer still resides on the Leagues club board.

While the odds are still in favour of Hasler earning a contract extension, his detractors haven't been silenced.

Castle is one of Hasler's main backers and is working towards extending the coach's contract, however she has met some resistance at board level.

The board gave the green light to put forward a revised contract to Hasler's manager George Mimis, but it remains unclear if Hasler will agree to the conditions.

"We continue to have positive conversations," Castle said after Thursday night's board meeting.

"We've got a position now we'll present to Des' management and we're hopeful that will result in a favourable outcome. There's still some hoops to jump through to make sure everything is sorted. But it continues to look very positive."

Hasler isn't the only person at Canterbury with their future clouded in uncertainty. Five-eighth Josh Reynolds, hooker Michael Lichaa and fullback Will Hopoate are all off contract and no closer to finding out where they will be in 2018.

Reynolds, who was one of the Bulldogs' best in the victory over the Broncos, says the relief on Hasler's face after the win was clear for everyone to see.

"For me it's really hard to see the criticism he cops because he gave me my shot," Reynolds said of his coach.

"He's the one who said you're going to be five-eighth for the Bulldogs. He's taught me so much. He's created me. Created the person I am. We've both worked ??? we've agreed, we've disagreed and it sucks for me to see that. But to go in there [against the Broncos] you could just see it in his face compared to last week.

"It is a massive relief for him and everyone who was involved. And I'll tell you right now there is 17, 18, 19 blokes in there who would say the exact same thing for him. Because he gets us ready every week. It's not him going out there putting in poor performances. There isn't ever a week where I haven't been 100 per cent ready due to Des giving us every chance."
