If Kelly were to seek a trade to Arden Street at the end of the season, it's understood North would have to be willing to part with a quality player and a first-round draft pick in return.

The Giants already have a multitude of talented youngsters and would be hunting one of North's prime movers.

Mason Wood, Jy Simpkin, Taylor Garner and even All-Australian ruckman Todd Goldstein would be some of the players looked at in a deal that could look similar to the epic trade that had Carlton land Chris Judd from West Coast at the end of 2007.

The Blues gave up picks 3 and 20, along with young forward Josh Kennedy to land the premiership captain.

The mammoth offer for Kelly from the Kangaroos comes as the club tries desperately to land a high-profile player, having failed to do so in several recent attempts.

Adam Treloar, Hamish Hartlett, Dan Hanneberry and Isaac Heeney were all offered long-term, multimillion-dollar contracts to make the switch to North Melbourne, but Treloar picked Collingwood and the other three stayed put.

Hanneberry and Heeney were offered six-year deals at nearly $1 million a season, but chose to stay loyal to the Swans.

The potential landing of Kelly, who finished fourth in the Giants' best and fairest last year, would be a huge coup for the Roos, because it would announce them as a destination club to rival the likes of Collingwood, Geelong and Hawthorn.

Kelly, who played his under-18s football at Sandringham, is the son of Phil Kelly who played 61 games for North in the early 1980s.

Josh has now played one more game than his father, and has had 27 disposals in both games this season, including three goals in Saturday's thrashing of Gold Coast.

While the Giants remain strong in their stance that Kelly will stay - he has been offered a two-year contract extension - the club is aware of a worrying trend that has had developing talent walk out the door.

Treloar, Taylor Adams, Jack Steele and Caleb Marchbank are just a handful of players who have left the Giants and are performing well at their new clubs.

Marchbank, who had his injury problems while at the club, is a particular frustration for the Giants, as they rated him highly and were desperate to keep him.

Coach Leon Cameron addressed the issue on Wednesday, stating he was "absolutely confident" Kelly would remain a Giant.

"I don't think we have to give him a reason [to stay], Josh already knows why he wants to be at the footy club.

"He really likes the place, he's bought into our footy club, he's in our leadership group, he's playing really good footy, he's very popular [here], and he wants to stay.

Cameron said he believed the leaking of specific details in contract offers was a strategy for rival clubs trying to poach players.

"I think it's a tactic isn't it, let's be honest," he said.

"There'll be people out there from every footy club trying to secure talent, whether it be from our footy club, or someone from Melbourne, Adelaide, Queensland or Western Australia.

"There's players moving from club to club a lot more, we've secured some outstanding players from other footy clubs, and likewise we've lost a couple, but we're absolutely confident, really confident of retaining Josh."

Cameron said he hoped the club would be able to re-sign Kelly soon: "Hopefully, we can get it done and dusted over the next couple of weeks, or month or so."

The timing of the Kelly offer couldn't be more intriguing, with the two sides to do battle on Saturday at Blundstone Arena in Hobart.
