The survey was conducted by Xtra Insights is the first ever radio ratings for Mount Isa and the surrounding region.
Hit102.5 (formerly Hot FM) captured half of the key breakfast audience (5.30am to 9am) with 50.1%, a long way clear of 4LM in second with 14.4% while ABC North West Queensland was third with 12.8% of the breakfast audience.
The national services all ranked behind the three local offerings at breakfast: Triple J (9.4%), ABC Classic FM (1.2%), ABC RN (0.8%) and ABC News Radio (0.4%).
The margin was closer between the top three in the morning slot (9am-noon) Hit102.5 taking 38.3%, 4LM 20.3% and ABC local radio 15.0% but Hit102.5’s margin’s is wide again in the afternoon, drive and weekend slots.
ABC North West Queensland does well in the evening slot coming in second with 23.4% to Hit102.5’s 31.7%.
Hit102.5’s cumulative audience is 14,700 measured as the total number of people who listen for eight minutes during the week. 4LM has 5700 while ABC North West has 4800 with Triple J fourth with 3800.
Not surprisingly the biggest audiences are at breakfast (5.30am-9am) when Hit102.5 gets 12,900 listeners, 4LM gets 4500, ABC North West 3400, Triple J 3200, RN 300, Classic FM 300 and News Radio 200.
Commercial Radio Australia introduced a new system for regional radio ratings last year, which allows smaller radio markets to undertake more regular, reliable and cost effective audience measurement.
The commercial radio stations serving the population of 21,000 people are Hit102.5 Mount Isa, part of the Southern Cross Austereo network, and 4LM 666, owned by Resonate Broadcasting, while ABC North West Queensland is the publicly-owned local station.
Community station Mob FM were not surveyed.
