Mongolian Wolf's new owners, the Melbourne Cup-winning syndicators Australian Bloodstock, have had the horse under their banner for barely a fortnight. And acknowledge they have "no idea" how he'll fare in the group 3 Frank Packer Plate at Randwick on Saturday.

But if the past couple of weeks have been any guide - Jon Snow and Bonneval romped home in the three-year-old classics to complement Gingernuts' group 1 success in Sydney - Mongolian Wolf can expect to make a winning debut for new trainer Darren Weir.

"We worked out early it was going to be a good year in New Zealand so we kept an eye on them very early in the piece," Australian Bloodstock director Jamie Lovett said.

"I thought he was the one that was a bit backwards and thought he might be a late-maturing three-year-old. We're not sure how he's going to go and I don't like doing this normally, but thought we'd have a throw at the stumps [in the Packer Plate].

"He comes through a pretty good batch of three-year-olds this year in New Zealand."

It means Weir and Australian Bloodstock will target the Queensland Derby with their recent acquisition should Mongolian Wolf, previously raced by the same interests as Caulfield Cup-winning stayer Mongolian Khan, impress in the Packer Plate.

Mongolian Wolf finished less than two lengths from Gingernuts when the pair met in the Avondale Guineas in New Zealand before he flopped in the New Zealand Derby.

"He had no luck in the Derby and whether he runs the trip is probably questionable and we'll find out later in the spring," Lovett said. "But he's certainly a horse that has a bit of upside to him.

"If he turns out a good horse - which we hope he does - four-year-olds have a great record in the Caulfield Cup and he might be that sort of profile. We might have to target the next level of races down. But he'll tell us where he fits in."

And that will be determined, in part, by what he does in the Packer Plate with only Acatour shading Mongolian Wolf in early markets.

Brenton Avdulla has been booked for the ride on Mongolian Wolf.

"We were going to bring [Mongolian Wolf] over and then go straight to Brisbane, but we thought we might as well have a poke around in Sydney and he'll tell us where he's at," Lovett said. "If he's had enough we'll find out pretty quick, but if he runs through the line ... you only get one three-year-old season so we might as well take him up for the Derby."

It could be the start of a big seven days for Lovett and Australian Bloodstock partner Luke Murrell, who watched in dismay as the $2 million Sydney Cup was abandoned mid-race last week.

The pair own favourite Big Duke, who will run in the rescheduled race on Saturday week.

"He's great and because he pulled out of the race at the 1000-metre mark he hasn't had a hard run," Lovett said. "We got to have a good track gallop on the grass. Some of the others have had a really tough two-mile run on a testing track. They'll either go one way or another and will be fit horses or won't cop it."
