They might've still lost, but Sharks coach Scott Logan was much happier with the fight shown in their 26-22 loss to the Woden Valley Rams at O'Connor on Saturday.

Logan was a big-hearted prop for the Canberra Raiders, Sydney Roosters and South Sydney over his 174-game NRL career and he was hoping some of that fight would rub off on his charges.

He retired as a player at the end of the 2010 season before joining St George Illawarra as an assistant coach.

Now he's back in Canberra and has the task of rebuilding the Sharks after a tough couple of seasons for the club.

Belconnen lost the opening two rounds by a combined margin of 110 points, but produced a much better performance against the Rams.

"Most coaches want the style of play to be reflected of them as a player and it's certainly not my style to give up," Logan said.

"Those first two rounds I wasn't happy at all. We've got a response and now it's about maintaining that standard."

But it looked like it might have been more of the same for the Sharks early in the game.

Rams second-rower Michael Gilmour scored two tries in the opening 15 minutes and his fellow forwards looked like they were going to have too much size for their Belconnen counterparts.

But a couple of errors around kick-offs got the Sharks back into the game.

They scored back-to-back tries, firstly with a Woden player stumbling over the dead-ball line after catching the restart, and then kicking it dead themselves.

Every time Woden Valley could open a gap, the Rams pegged them back, but just couldn't get their noses in front.

"I knew they'd play a lot better after the last couple of weeks and they did that today," Rams coach Ash Barnes said.

"They've got a number of good players in their team and I thought this was a danger game for us."

The Rams had a serious scare when prop Brandon Nangaiti lay motionless in the middle of the field for several minutes with a neck injury that had him concerned about not having movement in his leg.

Thankfully, he was eventually able to get to his feet and while he wasn't able to finish the game, he was okay afterwards.

"He mentioned that he lost a little bit of feeling in his legs after the initial contact, but he was capable of walking off the field so it's something we opted on the side of caution with," Logan said.

In other games, both Queanbeyan clubs won - with the Blues knocking off Goulburn 44-18 and the Roos beating Gungahlin 32-8 - while Yass co-coach Steve Naughton capped his first game in five years with two tries and an 18-14 victory over West Belconnen.
