In one of the biggest ever events held in the Isa, organisers Triple J said a crowd of 7000 people packed Tony White Oval for One Night Stand on a balmy Saturday evening to enjoy a great line-up of local and national artists.
Many drove hundreds if not thousands of kilometres to get here and most loved every minute of their stay.
It was probably an economic boost to town, it was definitely a psychological boost as Mount Isa was on everyone’s lips across the nation in the lead-up to the event.
Millions across Australia were also in Isa in spirit as the ABC youth station broadcast the event live on national radio and over the Internet.
After an official welcome to Kalkadoon country, local Indigenous man and Triple J Unearthed winner Lucky Luke opened the concert playing to his biggest ever audience with an energetic hip hop set, filled with guest MCs.
He was followed on stage by NSW band San Cisco who impressed before inviting Thelma Plum on stage to perform a cover song.
Melbourne’s Tash Sultana overcame a fierce flu to wow the crowd with her breakthrough hit ‘Jungle’, and treated Mount Isa to her new song ‘Murder To The Mind’.
Legendary hypeman Fatman Scoop made a last minute appearance to pump up the crowd, and even performed an impromptu ‘call and response’ during Thundamentals ‘Wyle Out Year’.
Police said people were well-behaved at the drug-and-alcohol-free event and many local organisations used the catering as major fundraising drives.
