All the original diggers may be dead but their spirit lives on in Mount Isa with this year’s service crammed with local youths from all the local schools as well as guides, scouts and members of the Boys and Girls Brigade.

It may have been the Easter school holidays but hundreds of them proudly donned their uniform and braved the hot sunshine cramming the Civic Centre lawn for the service.
MC Tony Mr Smith praised the work of local students who researched and then told the story of veterans who died in the First World War and are now buried in Mount Isa Cemetery.
“Each year they study up on five veterans with a little help from their teachers and present the information (here) and they’ve done really well,” he said.

Other students read out the list of the fallen from the First World War, Second World War and Vietnam War.
Guest speaker Mayor Joyce McCulloch recalled her time as a school child when she moved from the bush into town and participated in her first ever Anzac Day march.
“I thought I was deadly because I had so many people looking at me, though aged 10 I did not understand why I was marching,” she said.
