The Welcome To Mount Isa Billboard on the Barkly Highway east of the remote western Queensland city features a man hanging off the original billboard in budgie smugglers with a design of the Aboriginal flag. It was installed on Friday, April 21.
The brand installed the original billboard last year and advertised it on Facebook and Instagram, writing that their favourite photo with the hashtag #smugglingmountisa would replace it.
It considered The North West Star’s online poll in its decision, and the winner had 65 per cent of the votes.
The brand has promised that its favourite photo in front of this new billboard will replace the former; therefore becoming a billboard, of a billboard, of the billboard of Australia’s Most Ordinary Rig winner ‘Dingo’ Dan Leyden.
The first billboard was a bonus prize for Mr Leyden, who won the inaugural Australia’s Most Ordinary Rig competition in 2016. The national competition will be held again this year during which Mr Leyden will be labelled as the “mentor” for finalists.
Mr Leyden and his family moved to Brisbane in January. The plumber returned to Mount Isa this week for work reasons, but was able to attend Triple J’s One Night Stand during his visit. The new billboard was installed at the same time.
He checked out the billboard on Thursday with his rugby mate Stacie Campbell, where we arranged a photography shoot for their entries for a chance to be featured on the third billboard. We asked for props and they arrived at the site with a surfboard, a unicycle, and a dog. Photos were taken on the property with permission of landowners.
Budgy Smuggler spokesman Jarrod Allen, whose official title according to his email signature is ‘extreme unicyclist and part time mall Santa’, said that the new billboard will be replaced in a month.
“The best photo again in front of the billboard in smugglers will then be also getting put on the billboard next month. So people of the Isa, get out there and make some art.”
But he warned that dangerous stunts that risk injury for photographs will not be accepted.
The online hashtag for entrants’ photographs is #smugglingmountisa, but the privacy settings may determine accessibility for the brand.
