Joe will represent Australia at the Sudirman Cup in Queensland on the back of a silver medal in the mixed doubles at last year's Oceania Championship and defending singles national title in January.

The 21-year-old will look to further impress at the international tournament which is the first major event to be staged at the Gold Coast Sports Centre in the lead-in to the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

Joe watched the Rio action from afar last year after he was struck down with patella tendonitis and sidelined for three months.

"I was definitely in the running to make Rio because each continent sends a representative then badminton world federation depends on ranking, but now I'm aiming for the Commonwealth Games and Tokyo," Joe said.

After overcoming his knee troubles Joe travelled to Denmark for two months training at the world-renowned Odense Badminton Klub.

"It was really intense and we trained twice a day. I learnt to analyse a badminton match from a different perspective as well as learning slight variances in technique to improve my shot quality," Joe said.

"The game style is different over there, they prefer to play with an emphasis on consistency and fluid movements, while outside of Europe it's more explosive and hard-hitting."

Joe said he can't wait to wear green and gold for the first time as one of 14 Australians and 1500 players competing at the international championships on May 21-28.

The ANU student has been playing for 13 years under the guidance of his father who coaches him and while the sport is building in the ACT, the Belconnen junior wants to see more growth.

"It's getting bigger but not as fast as we'd like. It's hard to get badminton into schools so it's bigger with uni students and I'll be competing at the Australian Uni Games later this year," Joe said.

"When I tell people I play badminton most people say that's pretty cool then when I say I'm an international player they get pretty excited."
