The club has seen around 100 athletes attending each of its first few club days to begin the season, with athletes ranging in age from the four-year-old “minions” right through to the masters age group.
Seventeen-year-old Lachy McCoy will have his work cut out for him this year to secure the jumps club record double as he did in 2016 having this time needing to beat one of the club’s past greats in Mason Holm.
He has however made a solid start, taking the oval record in Long Jump with a leap of 5.64m.
Breanna ‘Cannon’ Waerea is already only three metres short of Breanna ‘Thor’ Smith’s 15 year girls Hammer club record, a great sign of things to come.
Four-year-old dynamo Hayley Greaves efforts will see her receive the season’s first “Mighty Minion” certificate for trying her best in every event.
Even though the season is still in its early stages legend certificates are already starting to accumulate with 19 to be awarded from the first two club days.
Certificates have gone to Michael Sexton, Breanna Waerea, Bryleah Cullen, Seinna TeWani, Tia Peel, Mollie English, Sienna Hilton, Scarlett Venz, Ava Harwood Corey Stewart, Rico Waerea, Dean English and Terri-Anne Knight.
All of these athletes have successfully passed the pre-determined levels set out by the club.
An athlete who passes a legend level is generally within the top 10 per cent of athletes in that event.
Athletics will continue on Saturday afternoons commencing at 2pm at Sunset Oval. Registration will be taken all season and the club offers two free trial days before fees are due.
