On Thursday, Cr Quirk unveiled Brisbane's first flashing traffic warning sign as part of a $3.2 million program to improve road safety through greater driver awareness.

Cr Quirk said the signs would target sites where illegal driving behaviour was creating safety concerns and leading to accidents.

Well known roads including Commercial Road at Newstead, Latrobe Terrace at Paddington and Dornoch Terrace at Highgate Hill are on the list for the first round of installations.

"These are situations where we already have traffic signs in place but we know also we have a high level of non-compliance," Cr Quirk said.

"Now what we want to do is bolster the awareness of traffic circumstances and condition by way of flashing traffic sign."

"This can be used particularly at pedestrian crossings, roundabouts, places where there are bends and curves in the road network, so it's about making sure we heighten that awareness for drivers."

The installation of 200 LED-lit street signs was first discussed in March, 2016, when it was made an LNP council election commitment.

The rectangular signs will light up with 'slow down' in highly visible LEDs when a vehicle approaches.

Each council ward will be allocated $28,000 per year for four years to purchase and install the signs.

Councillor Adam Allan (Northgate) said locations were generally chosen based on their own observations and feedback from council officers and residents.

"We do meet regularly with our local Queensland Police staff and they've given us an indication of places where they think these would be suitable."

The first sign was installed on Gympie Street, Northgate.

"The location in Northgate is a little bit of a speeding hotspot. It's next to a playground and we think it is an ideal location for a sign such as this one," Cr Allan said.

Cr Quirk said the council was unsure if the initial promise of 200 signs would be delivered as it would depend on the cost of the signs.

"We don't know how many signs the $3.2 million will create," he said.

"It will depend on the cost variation between solar, which we can estimate per sign, but if we have to connect to main power that can vary significantly.

"So at this stage we are not predicting a number. but what we will do is role out as many as we can and that it will go a long way, I think, to dealing with a lot of the hot spots we have in our city.

"But we will drive the dollar as far as we can to make sure we can get as many of these signs out, we're hoping to have as many 200 out on the network."
