The Department of Transport and Main Roads has put out a tender for a research and pilot project to improve road safety for international visitors.
The tender comes after fatal crashes in Queensland last year allegedly involving tourists driving on the wrong side of the road.
The trial will investigate the effectiveness of videos shown in flights or vehicle rental offices, information provided on GPS or phone maps, billboards and audio media for international visitors to listen to while driving, riding or walking.
Researchers will be asked to analyse high-crash locations for international visitors and contributing factors such as drink driving, helmet use, mobile phones, fatigue and driving to the conditions on remote roads.
They will also look for crash areas where signs or road markings could be made in "appropriate languages" or symbols, such as those telling pedestrians which way to look when crossing the road, for example in high-density immigrant population areas or heavy pedestrian tourist areas.
Transport and Main Roads customer service staff will be interviewed to identify any issues when dealing with foreign visitors; and safety information could be included on Chinese websites.
A previous review of the same issue was done in 2004, titled The Safety of International Visitors on Australian Roads.
The maximum budget for the contract is $247,500.
Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey said the government wanted to ensure all visitors remained safe on the roads.
"Tourists often make the most of our great state by taking self-drive holidays but we need to know we're doing all we can to help keep them safe," Mr Bailey said.
"Any fatality on our roads is a serious concern."
Mr Bailey said tenders were open for the development and trial of road safety countermeasures for international visitors.
"Our understanding of how international visitors use our roads is based on research conducted 10 years ago, so we are well overdue to gain some more current data on this," he said.
"This research will help us better understand the characteristics of tourists who choose to drive during their visit and the types of road incidents they are involved in.
"With this understanding, we can better target education for tourists planning to drive on our roads."
It comes during Yellow Ribbon National Road Safety Week and the United Nations Global Road Safety Week.
