Brayshaw was returning from his most recent concussion when he was hit by Carlton-listed player Jed Lamb while playing for Casey in the VFL on Sunday. Brayshaw took no further part in the game following the incident, which took place early in the first quarter.

It's understood he felt OK on Monday, but won't play this weekend, either for Melbourne or Casey, who take on Port Melbourne on Saturday night. Melbourne was hopeful of having the management plan completed before Wednesday. Brayshaw has played 33 AFL games after making his debut in 2014, but just 12 since the start of last year, having struggled with both injury and form.

Elsewhere injury-ravaged Greater Western Sydney have been dealt another blow with star midfielder Stephen Coniglio set to be unavailable until late in the season. Coniglio needs surgery after suffering a syndesmosis injury in his ankle in the final quarter of the Giants' narrow win over Collingwood on Saturday. It is a cruel turn for Coniglio, who had only just returned from another ankle injury. The Giants' head of athletic performance David Joyce said it was a nasty turn for the club, who are already without Ryan Griffen, Nick Haynes, Matt Buntine, Brett Deledio, Adam Kennedy, Jacob Hopper, Will Setterfield and Tendai Mzungu.

"It's always disappointing to lose a player for an extended period of time, but especially one of the calibre of Stephen who's already had an interrupted start to the season," Joyce said.

"The damage to Stephen's ankle is significantly worse than the previous injury so he'll undergo surgery before commencing a thorough rehabilitation program.

"We have no doubt that Stephen will attack his rehabilitation with the same diligence he does all areas of his football and will return to the field in peak condition later in the season."

The Giants also said Aidan Corr and Sam Reid would both be monitored following concussions against the Pies.

North Melbourne youngster Jy Simpkin will also go under the knife on Tuesday after the Roos confirmed that he had hurt his AC joint in Sunday's loss to Sydney. The Roos said Simpkin was likely to miss six weeks. "Unfortunately for Jy, he has injured his AC joint," North doctor Peter Bacquie told the club's website.

"Jy saw a specialist this morning and it was decided that surgery was the best option to repair the joint."

In better news for the Roos, forward Taylor Garner could return from hamstring tightness to face Melbourne at the MCG on Sunday.

Hawthorn have been bracing for Cyril Rioli to miss several weeks with a suspected PCL injury in Saturday's win over the Brisbane Lions in Launceston. The Hawks wouldn't confirm the extent of Rioli's injury on Monday, but it's expected they will on Tuesday release an update of a significant stint on the sidelines. Rioli limped off University of Tasmania Stadium after colliding with Lions forward Josh Walker in a marking contest.

It looms as a major setback for Hawthorn who are beginning to find form, winning three of their last four matches after starting the season 0-4.

Hawthorn face Collingwood on Saturday night at the MCG. The Hawks meanwhile announced on Monday that rookie Luke Surman had been released from his contract, saying that the 20-year-old had lost his passion for the game. Surman hadn't played a senior game.
