That comes as the findings of a Queensland government 2017 interim koala protection report found "little evidence that the rate at which koala habitat has been cleared has declined since 2008 - despite existing measures and the introduction of a number of new measures to protect koala habitat".

"In fact, over this time period the rate of loss of habitat has tended to increase," the Queensland government's expert panel interim report on clearing koala habitat found in February 2017.

RSPCA spokesman Michael Beatty said the number of Australian native animals bought to the organisation's Wacol hospital had increased from 8500 per year to 22,000 in since 2013.

The figures included koalas, possums, reptiles, birds, snakes and "everything right across the board", Mr Beatty said.

Figures from three animal hospitals in south-east Queensland show the traumatic impacts on koalas every day and how few are returned to the wild.

At Wacol, only 81 of the 323 koalas brought to the animal hospital since March last year recovered well enough to be returned to the wild. Most of the rest were put down.

At the National Parks and Wildlife Service's animal hospital at Moggill, only 33 of 432 koalas could be returned to the wild. Most of the rest were put down.

On the Sunshine Coast, Australia Zoo's animal hospital at Beerwah sees about 70 to 80 koalas per month, where about 70 per cent are either victims of car strikes or attacks from dogs or cats. It is unclear what proportion were put down because the zoo has additional capacity.

Mr Beatty said koalas were simply under extreme pressure in south-east Queensland.

"Often koalas have really bad injuries and they suffer really badly from stress," Mr Beatty said.

"Particularly if they are grabbed and shaken by a dog. Where a possum might survive, with a koala they really suffer from stress."

Mr Beatty said the number of koalas bought to the Wacol animal hospital was steadily increasing.

"You have to say most of that is linked to habitat destruction and what comes after that," he said.

"We are talking about being attacked by dogs and being run over by cars.

"Now, there are also increasing concerns about where they can be safely released."

Moggill's Koala Hospital

Queensland's National Parks and Wildlife Service - part of the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection - runs the nearby Moggill Koala Hospital.

Since April 1, 2016, 432 koalas were bought to the hospital.

Of those 214 were dead on arrival at the hospital, while 218 were alive.

Of those 218 who were alive, only 33 were able to returned to the wild.

However 185 koalas had to be killed because their injuries stopped them surviving in the wild.

Australia Zoo, Beerwah

The Australia Zoo animal hospital receives between 70 and 80 koalas per month; where about 70 per cent are victims of cars or attacks from domestic cats and dogs.

Meanwhile the WWF-Australia on Friday begins a campaign to raise the profile of land clearing on koala deaths, looking once again at data from 2013-2015.

Dr Christine Adams-Hosking, an honorary research fellow from the Global Change Institute has summarised previously released koala research showing massive declines in koalas in Queensland and New South Wales between 2010 and 2015 for WWF-Australia.

The bigger picture

The Queensland government failed in August 2016 to convince independent MPs to support its tree-clearing legislation, which the LNP opposition at the time described as including incorrect information.

The full report from the Queensland government expert panel on koala protection is due in June or July. It could recommend concentrating on large koala conservation zones greater than 1000 hectares and phasing out trying to preserve stricken koalas in urban south-east Queensland.
