The Goulburn Workers Bulldogs moved a step closer to the competition's top four with a convincing 28-14 win over the Belconnen United Sharks at Workers Arena on Sunday afternoon.

Goulburn's second win on the trot saw the Bulldogs move one win out of fourth on the ladder and highlighted just how tight the competition is as the halfway mark looms.

The two Queanbeyan clubs sit well clear on top of the league ladder, with reigning premiers West Belconnen hot on their tails.

From there just one win separates third from eighth, with the Sharks sitting ninth after they couldn't produce another upset despite starting like a house on fire.

But that does nothing to ease the pain of Belconnen coach Scott Logan, who has called on his side to "have a little bit more pride in their effort".

Belconnen have now conceded nearly 300 points in seven games and Logan says there is no quick fix, for all the Sharks can do to turn things around is put in some "good old fashioned hard work".

Logan pleaded with his players to "buy into the fact that they can actually achieve things" as their lean record continued.

"We're finding it's more of a mindset with the boys, just trying to find some consistency with [our defence]," Logan said.

"We have some really good patches in games where we do some really good stuff, and then we have some brain snaps where we come up with some poor options, and some physical efforts that aren't good enough for what we want at times."

It took just two minutes for the Sharks to draw first blood when Kitine Vikash scored down the left side, but perhaps that was what Goulburn needed to switch on.

The Bulldogs ran in four tries to close the half with a 22-4 lead and put one foot inside the top four logjam, and by then the game was as good as gone for the Sharks.

"The damage was really done in the first half," Logan said.

"Our execution wasn't as good as the week before so that just made for a non-event in the second half.

"The game was pretty much gone and we never really looked like we were going to trouble them and fight back."

Belconnen struck back when winger Matthew Butz took advantage of a simple overlap after his opposite man Dominic Stephens was sent to the sin bin for a professional foul in the 60th minute.

Bulldogs captain-coach Mick Picker stuck a dagger into Belconnen's hearts when he crossed to put the result beyond doubt, leaving a late Andrew Pelasio try as nothing more than a consolation effort.
