It's one of the reason's why Soliola sees the young custodian as a "huge asset" for the Green Machine.

Wighton re-signed with the Raiders for another two years, keeping him in Canberra until at least the end of 2020.

The 24-year-old has played 104 NRL games for the Raiders and made four appearances for NSW Country, as well as representing the Indigenous All Stars.

Soliola believed he would develop into a "foundation" for the Green Machine as part of their spine.

Wighton had a few tough knock-ons against the Parramatta Eels on the weekend, but was able to turn things around to play a crucial role in the 22-16 come-from-behind victory at ANZ Stadium on Saturday.

It was his cut-out pass that opened the door for Canberra winger Jordan Rapana to score the winning try.

Soliola said that ability to dig deep was a mark of the kind of player Wighton was.

"That's his character. I wouldn't expect anything less from Jack. That's the type of guy I've come to know," he said.

"He's had his critics when he first started playing at fullback and he's proven a lot of guys wrong.

"He's a resilient player, he wears his heart on his sleeve and he goes for everything 100 per cent.

"Sometimes it doesn't work out on the footy field, but as long as you can regather and what you do off the back of something that doesn't go your way and get a positive reaction out of it, that's a great sign for the club."

Wighton made his debut for the Raiders on the wing against the Gold Coast Titans in 2012, but has since established himself at fullback for the Green Machine.

He also feels like he's established himself in the ACT with his partner and daughter, which was one of the reasons he wanted to recommit to the Raiders.

The Orange product has his sights set on becoming a leader at the club as well.

"I'm stoked mate. I love the club, they've shown me a lot of love and me and my family couldn't be happier here," Wighton said.

"Canberra in general is a big country city and it reminds me of home a lot, and I'm very comfortable here.

"I'll be striving by the end of the contract to definitely be in a leadership role."

Soliola was excited about Wighton's future, predicting the young fullback would become a key player for Canberra.

Wighton became something of a barometer for the Raiders last season.

He struggled in the first half of their campaign, but was brilliant as they emerged as genuine contenders to make a charge to the preliminary final.

Soliola expected that influence to continue in the coming years.

"He'll definitely be one of the foundations with the spine that we have right now," Soliola said.

"That's what you need. You need guys that can cement their spots week-in, week-out and that's what Jack can do. He's really consistent in his performances.

"I think he'll be a huge asset for the club and outside of the footy field he's a great bloke. A lot of people respect him as one of our players and one of our leaders as well."
