The QMEA developed the program for school principals who wanted to inspire and motivate junior year students to experience the fun of practical science.

Glencore’s Mount Isa Mines, HR manager Leanne Ryder said the program enabled the students to see first-hand the endless possibilities of science.

“Showing the fun of physics and the joy of science to our younger cohorts through Physics in Flight helps to create an interest, which will hopefully carry over into further years,” Ms Ryder said.

Physics in Flight is a paper plane throwing competition, which involved all Year 7s at the school, led by two Glencore engineers, who gave them tips on achieving the best flight times.

Students researched, designed and tested the paper planes, which needed to stay in the air the longest to win.

QMEA is the education and skills arm of the QRC tasked with providing pathways for students into the resources sector. It is a partnership between the resources sector and government through the Gateway to Industry Schools Program.

QRC Skills, Education and Diversity Director Katrina-Lee Jones said the program explained practical application of physics to everyday life, and the range of physics related careers

“From throwing a ball, flying a paper plane or designing a conveyor belt, physics concepts are around us every day,” Ms Jones said.

Spinifex State College teacher Dan Horskins thanked Glencore for their involvement in the program and the experience the engineers brought to the classroom.

“Physics in Flight was well received by all of the students and at times they were in awe of the extensive knowledge of the Glencore engineers. All of them had a great time and went home with a different view of science which is a great outcome for the program,” Mr Horskins said.

Students will now work to understand the best physics concepts for their team and put knowledge into practice for the grand final next month.
