Cloke was one of three omissions for the Dogs, along with Jack Redpath and Lukas Webb, for their crunch clash against St Kilda at Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

The premiership Magpie was axed after failing to have an impact in the aerial contests during the Dogs' 23-point loss to Geelong last week.

But if he improves that part of his game at VFL level, Beveridge said Cloke would be a strong chance of regaining his spot in the senior side.

"He started the year in our best 22 and there's no reason why he can't come back into it. It was unexpected to see what unfolded last week and I'm sure he can tidy it up pretty quickly," Beveridge said.

"We just didn't quite get what we needed from our key forwards and we were beaten in the air quite significantly by Geelong's defence."

Tom Liberatore is another big name to have been left out of the Bulldogs' best 22 this week, but Beveridge said the midfielder had responded well to his omission last week and was confident he would force his way back into the team soon.

Beveridge has made changes to his side on a regular basis this year as he attempts to recapture the Dogs' premiership-winning form.

The Bulldogs coach admitted it was very hard for his players to process the disappointment of being dropped but transparency and honesty in the way he delivered the news to them was an important part of the process.

"That's one of the reasons why we start the conversation so early and have multiple conversations, or dialogue and connections, to make sure they're really ready for the disappointment and that they can process it and play well," Beveridge said.

"But it's not a crisis for a player but it is a point in their week and their footy life that they need to process and get back on track to play well and we identify with that and make sure we do it the right way.

"Part of the conversation is about the relationship still being healthy and as long as they're getting honesty, then it's a good platform to stay on."

Beveridge wasn't concerned that consistently tinkering with the team would have an unsettling effect and stressed that players performing well in the reserves needed to be rewarded at the expense of their under-performing teammates in the senior side.

"It would be nice to be settled and winning and playing really good footy, that's the ideal we strive for," he said.

"But even our history says we've never been able to do that anyway over the last couple of years so it's not something we're concerned about but we're hoping that we get some continuity and some consistency as a team as much as anything and we are still searching for that.

"That pressure is always healthy for spots and for me it's not risky at all, it's just a bit of natural selection in the AFL sphere."

The beneficiaries of Beveridge's selection policy this week are Jake Stringer, Shane Biggs and young ruckman Tim English who will make his debut.

"He's got terrific game sense, and he's highly skilled for a big guy and he's very agile for a tall player as well," Beveridge said of English.

"He's not your traditional stereotypical ruckman, so it's exciting to have him in the team."

Premiership tall Jordan Roughead was on the verge of being selected but Beveridge opted for English because the No.19 pick at last year's draft has had more footy under his belt.

Roughead hasn't played yet this year since injuring his hamstring in the pre-season.
