Mr Gransbury, 64, was diagnosed with brain cancer in February 2016.

What followed were surgeries, where part of his brain was removed, and the prognosis he only had 10 to 14 months to live.

Mr Gransbury's daughter Cate McDermott wanted to create a lasting memory with her father so signed them up to complete a five-kilometre fun-run, the City2South.

"She wanted to do something with me just to remember me by so we did the thing," Mr Gransbury said.

"As we finished it I said I'm going to live longer than the 14 months, I feel strong."

This year Mr Gransbury, is living each day as it comes, and will spend June 4 running in an event 12 months earlier he thought would be his last.

"My dad used to say in the later stages of his life that if you wake up then it's a good day," Mr Gransbury said.

"My attitude is treat everything as a gift and try and turn it into a memory."

Mr Gransbury said he was especially looking forward to his daughter pushing her newly born daughter, Grace, in the pram as they completed the five-kilometre run.

"Just get on with it and enjoy it while you can," he said.

Ahead of the event Mr Gransbury said he planned to raise money for brain cancer research.

The Brisbane Times City2South presented by Westpac attracts thousands of entries every year - with many participants raising money for causes.

Kye and Pia Kanemura will also complete alongside Mr Gransbury in the five-kilometre event but have chosen to raise funds for Rett Syndrome Research Trust.

Kye Kanemura wants his sister Pia to experience what he can

Pia Kanemura can't walk or speak but with the help of her older brother Kye she will be able to compete in the running event.

Pia, 12, has Rett syndrome, a rare condition that affects brain development.

Her mother, AJ Kanemura, said the syndrome was often described as autism, cerebral palsy, Parkinson's disease, epilepsy and anxiety disorder all in one.

"She endures so much, such a strong girl," Mrs Kanemura said.

Kye will run while pushing his sister along with him in a specially designed pram

Kye, 14, said he had been training a lot by himself, completing 14 sessions of running, swimming or bike riding every week.

"It is important for me to get her (Pia) to experience the sports I love," Kye said.

"We are a great team together. I push her, she 'pushes' me."

Mrs Kanemura said seeing her son and daughter compete together was something she loved.

"Every time I see them together, it brings a tear to my eye," she said.

"They have never got to play together as little kids, cannot talk to each other or fight, anything what normal siblings would do together."

Kye said he was looking forward to running the City2South with his sister as he loved running in Brisbane,

"It looks like a nice course ... love the bridges and the view of the river and the city," he said.

Martina Mann doesn't want a shock diagnosis to stop her doing what she loves

A shock cancer diagnosis has not stopped Martina Mann from doing something she looks forward to every year.

The 53-year-old Brisbane resident was diagnosed with smouldering myeloma - a bone cancer - on October 23, 2015.

"I donated blood for many years and had been asked by the Red Cross to donate plasma instead. I did so," Mrs Mann said.

"Unfortunately that is when they found an abnormality in my blood.

"Very rare in my case as I am female, not overweight, not old. Ticking all the right boxes but unfortunately I have it."

Mrs Mann said while she currently feels very well not knowing when the dormant cancer could move to the next level was like having a cloud hanging over her.

"Since my diagnosis I have had a little bucket list. I am going through it as best I can," she said.

The bucket list includes marathons, 100-kilometre cycles, even flying a plane.

But while Mrs Mann checks off new life goals she continues to revert back to old achievements.

She has been running in the 14-kilometre City2South event since it started in 2013.

"It's a really lovely event. I have enjoyed it immensely every year," she said.

"As long as I am able to do it, I hope to compete in it."

The event this year will be a little different for Mrs Mann, as she will be running with her husband Paul by her side.

"Guess this year it's his turn to be dragged around the streets of Brisbane," Mrs Mann said.

Mr Mann said his wife had asked him to keep her company on the run.

"She asked me to support her and keep her company, I have done a few five- and 10-kilometre runs," he said.

"This will be a challenge."
