They showcased the dances they will perform at the Laura Aboriginal Dance Festival held between June 30 and July 2, and cut a cake to celebrate a year since the dance troupe formed.
Kalkadoon Community chair Virginia Mayo said during the event that the Sundowners formed 12 months ago as part of an initiative to restore cultural practices.
She recognised the Kalkadoon elders and also the effort and work of the young dancers and volunteers.
Kalkadoon Community also aimed to restore the Kalkatungu language, she said.
Songman Ron Guivarra said the first dance was a welcome. “We’re calling on all the children, the brilla brilla, to dance for all the people,” he said as an introduction.
