But there's never been one more spectacular than the diminutive Brazilian with the cannon-like left leg, Roberto Carlos.
The defender (who, in truth, spent most of his life attacking, as is the Brazilian way) scored spectacular goals, won four Spanish League titles with Real Madrid, three Champions League trophies and the World Cup. Not to mention numerous domestic Brazilian trophies.
He spent time with Fairfax Media reporter Michael Lynch discussing why he is in Australia, who he most admired as players and what his career highlights were.
ML: Why have you come to Australia? South Melbourne has said that you will coach them if they get into the A-League
RC: "I am here to promote our academy (the Geneva academy, which has links with South Melbourne) and South Melbourne."
Not to coach then?
"I respect their coach now [Chris Taylor]. He is very good. Maybe if they get to the A-League. This club has a great history."
You had a great career, what were the highlights?
"Winning the World Cup in 2002. Also 1997 and 1998 in the Champions League ... those are the main memories, my main highlights."
You played against Australia in the 2006 World Cup. Do you remember the game?
"It was a very good team, a very difficult team. That was the best Australian team I saw. I don't remember exactly who I was marking, but they kept changing wings, it was confusing."
Did you start life as a defender? You certainly liked to get forward and attack and you scored plenty of goals (71 in a 24 year career).
"I was an attacker ... The left-back was sick one day when I was young, and the coach put me at left-back. I played well, and then they never changed it. It was in Brazil in a small team near Sao Paolo."
Who were the best players you played with? You were in some great teams.
"I played with so many ... we had fun, we learned from each other ... It was a fun time always."
How good was Zidane (a Madrid teammate).
"He was a top player."
The best you played with? One of the best? Who was the best?
"Ronaldo Fenomeno [the Phenomenon, as he was universally known from a young age, the great Brazilian striker]."
What made him so good?
"He had fun playing football. He did with the ball what no one would do. He was spectacular."
Who was your hardest opponent?
"Figo, Luis Figo [the star Portuguese winger] when he was at Barcelona. Then he came to Madrid. He was very fast and very skilful."
