Mount Isa City Council and Kalkadoon Community members will begin work on a large scale mural project at the Fun Park Precinct in the Skate Park area to showcase Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander art that reflects cultural connection to the region.
The launch at 10am will be hosted by Council and Kalkadoon Community representatives and include a traditional smoking ceremony, cultural address by Kalkadoon Community chair Virginia Mayo, and project information by artist Sheree Blackley.
Mayor Joyce McCulloch said she was delighted to launch such a creative and culturally appropriate project for Reconciliation Week.
“These murals will not only be a beautiful addition to this popular family recreational area, but one that highlights our important history of indigenous culture and identity in Mount Isa, and what it represents,” Cr McCulloch said.
“Having members of the Kalkadoon Community work with us on this project is a wonderful collaboration and a way to celebrate all cultures coming together during this important time.”
Local Indigenous artist Sheree Blackley said the project would highlight the importance of Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander culture within the community.
“This project will be way for us to both recognise and celebrate our different cultural backgrounds in Mount Isa and a wonderful way to acknowledge Reconciliation Week,” Ms Blackley said.
“It will be a special place that can host future celebrations and commemorations.”
The mural project will begin later this week, with an official opening scheduled for early July.
