Townies have gone top of the ladder after a dominating performance in the main match against the Normanton Stingers.
Along with eventual premiers Cloncurry, Town and Normanton were the two strongest sides in 2016 and both have backed up to be big challengers again in 2017.
The two sides went into the game level on top of the ladder on 22 points but it was the Town Lions who started strongly and went on to record a comfortable victory.
Townies coach Sean Wade said his side were disciplined despite being depleted in numbers,
“We had a number of the regular first graders not playing for an array of reasons, but the Town limited numbers held their defensive line and were able to produce a number of good attacking raids which culminated in points to maintain their momentum towards the end of the season,” Wade said.

Town went on to win 56-16.
Meanwhile Blackstars took on Wanderers in the opening game and although the final score was a blowout it was an entertaining game that could have gone either way.
The Starries got off to a flier, bagging two early tries before Wanderers steadied.
They got on the board and quickly grabbed another to make matters 12-10 on 15 minutes.
But just when it seemed they were getting on top a Black Stars intercept led to a breakaway try and Jacob Tukarit used his strength to crash over for another.
The Devils struggled to contain the Starries’ speed merchants who dazzled for two more tries and although Wandereres pulled one back, another Black Stars try on the siren left matters at 34-18 at the break.
Though Black Stars grabbed the first try of the second half, it was an arm wrestle and if Wanderers had scored momentum might have swung back. They didn’t however and Black Stars went on to win 68-22.
In the other game in Cloncurry, the premiers were too good for Brothers 78-6.
