It's less than a month until Wimbledon starts in the south-west of London, the city which was put on high alert over the weekend after two attacks left at least seven people dead in the England capital.

It comes less than two weeks after a bomb blast killed 22 people at an Ariana Grande concert in Manchester.

Wimbledon is one of the biggest sporting events in the world, but Woodbridge said tournament organisers had been monitoring terrorism threats since before his first senior appearance there in 1988.

Woodbridge won 10 doubles titles as the world's most famous tennis tournament - nine men's and one mixed - over a glittering career that also included gold and silver Olympic medals in doubles.

He said back when his career kicked off Wimbledon organisers were constantly mindful of any threats posed by the Irish Republican Army and he was confident they would be working to ensure the safety of all the players at next month's tournament.

"They work closely with the police. Wimbledon's an extraordinary place - they've been dealing with terrorist stuff since I first went there in the early 80s with the IRA," he said.

"It won't affect the tournament running smoothly, but it will be an issue that everybody will have on high alert.

"I'm very confident. They are an extremely fine-tuned organisation and they will have done everything they possibly can to be prepared."

Despite Nick Kyrgios's early exit from the French Open, Woodbridge was expecting the Canberra star to have his best Wimbledon yet.

The world No. 19 made it to the round of 16 last year where he lost to eventual champion Andy Murray, with his best effort coming in his first senior campaign in 2014.

He beat then world No.1 Rafael Nadal on the way to the quarter-finals and a loss to Milos Raonic.

Woodbridge said Kyrgios was always expected to struggle at Roland Garos after he struggled with injuries and the death of his grandfather.

South African Kevin Anderson knocked the 22-year-old out in the second round of the French last week.

But Woodbridge felt Kyrgios' impressive efforts guiding Australia to the semi-final of the Davis Cup was an important step for the young Canberran.

He said while Kyrgios still had a way to go, he was leading the next generation that's pushing to take over from the era currently dominated by Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Andy Murray.

"His Davis Cup performances were probably one of the most important results he's had because that's the most pressure you can play under when you play Davis Cup," Woodbridge said.

"You're representing everybody. Your loss is their loss. I thought the way he stepped up at Davis Cup was really important for him.

"Grass is a really good surface - he's dynamic, he's got that great serve and he's a good result there.

"For me this is the tournament this year I think he'll have his best run at."

Woodbridge was in Canberra on Monday on a two-day trip for the Hot Shots program, giving out free racquets and coaching sessions at four schools across Canberra.

He started playing tennis when he was five, but said tennis had fallen behind and this program was the best way to boost participation in a crowded market that includes AFL, cricket and netball.

More than 80,000 racquets have been given out over the last two years, with 2500 schools visited over the past four.

"Everybody's trying to get young kids into their sport and if you're not actively out there putting it in front of them, they're not going to get there because they're going to go to soccer, AFL, netball, cricket - everybody's vying for the same kids," Woodbridge said.

"We used to get those kids as an automatic and now we don't. Now we've got the opportunity to go out and do it more."
