Hypnolicious! is a comedy show involving hypnosis.
Matt has been hypnotising people since he was 21 and honing his comedy show for the last eight or nine years since working in breakfast radio in Melbourne and Perth.
I like to take the mystery out of hypnosis and show people how and why it works, and even let them experience it themselves.
- Hypnotist, Matt Hale
He now travels the world hypnotising people on stage and in sessions for quitting smoking and losing weight.
Matt says he enjoys entertaining people as much as helping them.
“I did initially come from the entertainment side of it, and when I’m doing my show I’m kind of on the side of the audience, I want to see these guys on stage do these funny things.
“It has to be fun and funny for the people taking part in it.
Before beginning each show Matt dispels myths on hypnosis to the audience.
“I like to take the mystery out of hypnosis and show people how and why it works, and even let them experience it themselves,” says Matt.
“Some people think it’s mind control, or ask things like ‘What if I get stuck in hypnosis?’ which is a hilarious idea,” Matt said.
So, what is hypnosis?
Matt describes it as ‘daydreaming on purpose’, where the subconscious mind is open to ideas.
“It’s just getting people to imagine something so much that they focus on a suggestion so much that it starts to feel real in that moment.
“We all experience this every day of our life, we don’t normally put ourselves into it on purpose, like I do on the stage or in a session.”
“As an example, if you were to watch a particularly sad movie, you could start bawling your eyes out despite the fact that it’s just a thought making you have that reaction, because these are just actors, making up a story which is not real but there’s still an absolute physical reaction,” Matt says.
“It’s like daydreaming – you can be focused on something completely different despite the fact your doing something quite complex, like driving.”
“The truth is, we all have the same memory, it’s just how we use it. You’ve got to use it and exercise like any muscle to get the best out of it,” Matt said.
“I find it very easy to change the way we think just by spending a bit of time thinking about how the way we think.”
