Luckily, one of his teammates spotted he'd been taken in the 28th round of the national draft on Thursday.

He was unsure exactly when he would join the MLB organisation, but felt it would be for the upcoming short-season A-ball - several rungs below the Majors.

The second-base has been playing baseball since he was a kid, following his father and two older brothers into the sport to play for the ACT Eagles.

"I didn't really talk to the [Tigers] team much about it. I was training earlier and I was in the locker room and one of the guys came in and said, 'You got picked up'," Warner said with a slight Texan twang.

"We had some scout meetings early on, a couple of months ago, but I didn't really get a phone call - it was just a selection I guess.

"I was following it a little bit, but we were getting ready for training ... it was pretty cool.

"Every young baseball player dreams of playing at a higher level, either professional or college baseball."

But first, he'll get the perfect audition for what it would be like playing in the Show.

Warner's Texas Christian University will play in the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska, on the weekend - with the top eight college teams from around the USA fighting it out for the title.

The 23-year-old expected crowds of about 30,000 to flock to the ballpark as the creme of the collegiate crop duke it out.

Warner has starred for the TCU Horned Frogs with a batting average of .292, including five home runs and 49 runs batted-in.

It earned the communications student a spot in the Big 12 All-Conference team for the second straight year.

"It's a really big deal over here [the College World Series]. There'll be crowds of 30,000 people there so it will be fun," Warner said.

Now that he'll join the professional ranks, it also opens the door for Warner to follow his brother Ben into the Australian Baseball League.

Colleges have strict rules to ensure their players maintain their amateur status, which meant he's been unable to play in the ABL because it's classed as a professional league.

Warner's brother Ben played 58 games for the Canberra Cavalry across three seasons, which included being part of the squad that won the ACT's historic first Claxton Shield.

Now Warner could help bolster the Cavalry's infield stocks in their upcoming campaign.

"I haven't really talked to the guys yet there, but it is a strong possibility I'll play for the Cavs yeah," he said.
