But a new organisation is helping get the children out of the hospital and make them TV stars, with their work also entertaining their fellow young patients confined to the hospital grounds.
Juiced TV produces a weekly half-hour show that is made by the kids in hospital, for the kids in hospital. On Saturday, they teamed up with Dragon Boat Queensland to raise funds to keep bringing smiles to the faces of sick children.
A total of 17 dragon boat teams participated in the day of racing and entertainment, with an estimated $45,000 raised by the boat crews for Juiced TV and the Children's Hospital Foundation.
Juiced TV creator Pip Russell said the $50,000 mark was expected to be broken, with further funds to come from an auction of donated sporting memorabilia.
"It's so humbling to see the amount of supporters and general public who come together to support the kids of the hospital," she said.
Preston, 13, said his time in hospital was usually boring until he became involved with Juiced TV.
He has since made six appearances on the program, won several awards for his on-camera work and on Saturday interviewed dragon boat crews for the next episode.
