Visitor expenditure in Queensland has grown by 5.8 per cent from the previous year, she said. This was almost double the rate of NSW.
Three quarters of tourism expenditure in Queensland comes from outside Brisbane, Ms Jones said.
The tourist manager for Mount Isa’s tourism centre Outback at Isa, Kylie Rixon, said the increased rate of tourists visiting the region did align with the state government’s view of tourism growth.
Mount Isa’s tourism industry still predominantly benefited from grey nomads but it was increasingly benefiting from families.
It also benefited from “empty nesters” – parents with children no longer dependent on them.
These types of tourists took shorter holiday breaks than grey nomads of between a fortnight to a month.
