The short message is: don't leave town without cash, fuel and water.
The three main tips are:
1. Factor in drinks, food and purchases from the various hawkers. It is very hard to get cash up there.
2. Make sure you have enough fuel to get home as there is none available once you leave Julia Creek.
3. While there is a bar and caterer, you should have your own drinking water.
The Saxby Round Up goes from June 29 to July 2.
There is no mobile reception in the area.
This year’s Round Up is being badged as part of the Great Western Games.
To get to Saxby turn on to the Wills Development Road a few kilometres west of Julia Creek.
Travel on this single lane bitumen road for about 19kms.
Then turn right onto the Millungera/Taldora Road.
This road is bitumen for a lot of the way to Saxby which is about 156km along this road.
The last 70 to 80 kilometres are dirt.
The event starts Thursday at 1pm with a maiden draft that goes on all afternoon.
The maiden draft continues on Friday morning at 7am.
Also on Friday are the Saxby mini workout, the junior draft and the maiden draft final with the station buck jump bringing a lively end to the day’s proceedings.
The action continues at 7am Saturday with the Ken Daley Memorial Open Draft before a host of rodeo events in the arena.
They include the barrel race, the rope and tie, the team roping, the bulldogging, the open bull ride, the open bronc ride, the bareback, the bullock ride and the loan station buck jump.
The action resumes at 7am Sunday morning in the campdraft with the finals.
The Saxby gymkhana is also starting on Friday with the lady rider and hack competitions.
Organisers thank Curley Transport for carting the cattle, Iffley Station for donating the cattle and Jake and Sally Webster for sponsoring the hay and all the other businesses and sponsors that have helped out.
