The event was supported by the Great Western Games. The games’s associated representatives including Olympian Jon Sieben, a representative of sponsor Glencore and the Cloncurry mayor Greg Campbell visited the club to acknowledge the shoot.
Club president Jim Molloy said that 78 competitors, some traveling as far as Kingaroy, competed in the event. He said the shoot would be held even if the games were not held, but that it was good to have the support of associated representatives and Glencore.
Competitor Travis Streeter, 13, from Biloela, recently qualified for nationals at the Gemfields state shoot. He said shooting was “80 per cent mental and 20 per cent physical.”
“It’s all for fun. It’s just competing against yourself and it’s different to team sports, because in team sports people hog the ball. You’re only versing yourself.
“If you win it’s something that’s extra,” Streeter said.
Results to come.
