Longreach Acting Inspector Graham Seabrook says police were notified of the death on Wednesday which occurred in a 20m confined shaft needing a rescue from Townsville to retrieve the body later tonight.
"Department of Mines has been contacted and enquiries made with them,” Act Inp Seabrook said.
“They are also sending two inspectors from Mount Isa to ascertain the extent of the mining operation.”
Last October Longreach man Sidney Cuddy, 62, died while fossicking for opals at Opalton when the mine shaft where he was working in collapsed on him.
