The Mount Isa community had raised more than $9000 for the Woodward boys to compete in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Bill competes in the 11-year-boys and 12-years and under cruiser, and Philip competes in the 13 and 14 years cruiser.
More than $1000 had been raised through raffle tickets. Bell & Moir Toyota had donated a Cowboys jersey which had started off the raffle.
“I could not afford to just say ‘here’s cash’,” principal Lee Pulman said. “As part of the Cowboys sponsorship I could get something...I couldn’t turn around and say ‘here’s $10,000. I wish I could but not in these times.”
Fundraising coordinator Tammy George said the Woodwards were grateful to businesses and locals that had donated and bought tickets. “You don’t expect anything, you just ask, but it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to get anything really,” she said.
The raffle was drawn at Bell & Moir Toyota on Monday afternoon. The first prize was won by ‘Mick and Ray’. Second prize was won by Jimmy Papadopoulos. Third prize was won by Sonia Laffin. Fourth prize was won by Freda Henderson-Wilson.
