The Leichhardt Services Bowls Club held its annual triples tournament over the last weekend.

There were 12 mixed teams playing off over five rounds with the hope of claiming top spot and a share in the prize money.

To try and maximise player numbers for the tournament the Services Bowls Club changed up the format and instead of calling for team nominations they called for individual bowler nominations and their preferred playing positions.

After evenly sorting the players into positions player names were drawn out of a hat to determine what team they would be in.

Services Bowls Club Graham Von Hoff was excited with the format saying that forming teams this way gave the newer inexperienced bowlers not only an opportunity to play with the established players but also a chance to be amongst the prize money, something they normally don’t get.

After the three games on Saturday Team Wildermuth Jnr and Team Peters were the only teams to be undefeated to lead the field, with half a dozen teams hot on their heels with two wins.

Sunday was always going to be an interesting day of bowls to see if the two leading teams could remain undefeated.

Team Wildermuth Jnr did as expected and won his first game to remain in the box seat, but unfortunately for Team Peters they suffered an upset defeat against Team Jago.

This then opened the door for Team Painter, Team Cahill, Team Woods and Team Jago who all opened the second day with a win.

Team Jago climbed into second due to the highest for and against with Team Painter third and Team Peters fourth. With the tournament still up for grabs the last round was going to be interesting with Team Wildermuth Jnr taking on Team Jago, Team Painter taking on Team Walker and Team Peters taking on Team Cahill.

Team Wildermuth Jnr held their nerve and beat Team Jago, Team Walker upset Team Painter and Team Peters defeated Team Cahill.

After adding up the wins / losses and for and against Team Wildermuth Jnr was declared the winner undefeated for the weekend, with Team Peters jumping from fourth to second place followed by Team Jago and Team Woods who were third and fourth.

Von Hoff said it was a great weekend for bowls in Mount Isa and thanked the tournament sponsors and four Cloncurry bowlers who travelled up for the weekend.

Team Wildermuth Jnr was declared the winner undefeated for the weekend.
